Are you always stressed out?
Stress has become the bane of the modern lifestyle. Not only can stress cause weight gain and sleep related problems, it also increases your risk towards chronic diseases like Hypertension and Diabetes Type 2. So is it possible to beat stress? Yes, it is; and all it really requires is a change in your attitude towards life.
Here are 5 ways to beat stress and learn to relax your mind, body and spirit:
- Identify your Stress Triggers
For most of us, stress is caused by particular triggers. And to overcome stress, we need to first identify these triggers, so that we can work towards eliminating them from our lives. It could be your hectic work schedule, the long commute to and from office, an unhappy married life, or your discontentment towards your job. Whatever it may be, it is important that you pay attention to the situation in which you feel the first signs of stress creep in.
2. Master the Art of Acceptance
More often than not, stress is a result of unhappiness. And unhappiness is a result of not being able to accept the changes in your life. The key to beat stress is to be more flexible; learn to accept the fact that life comes with both ups and downs, and if you need to work upon attaining a positive attitude towards life, seek help. Yoga and meditation can be great tools; they help you reconnect with your inner self and show you the path towards acceptance.
3. Appreciate Silence
The fact that we are so immersed in all kinds of information – both good and bad, throughout the day, can also add to stress. From smart phones to tablets to laptops to pagers – we are always overloaded with information, which means we have little to no time to really relax and focus on our thoughts. Make time to sit in silence at a quiet spot; be your tranquil bedroom or the park next to your apartment building. Turn off all gadgets and simply revel in silence. You can also try ‘Relaxation Response’ by chanting ‘Om’ or count from 1 to 10.
4. Practice Deep Breathing
Feel a panic attack looming over your head? Shut your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Make sure that you inhale deeply, inflate your stomach, and hold your breath for just a couple of seconds and then release. By focusing on your breathing, you shut out the world and your mind will relax instantly.
5. Be Organized
The biggest reason we are so stressed out is because we aren’t organized. We don’t set priorities and then we find that we have too much to do and too little time to do it in. To be stress free, practice a little more discipline and learn to become more organized. Plan your day in advance, so that there are no unpleasant surprises waiting for you later in the day that may trigger stress.
